Metal Protection for Metal Buildings

Metal Protection for Metal Buildings
Revised February 20, 2022
ARMOR POLY® VCI Film
ARMOR POLY® VCI Film

Red Iron Steel building frames must be painted for metal protection. Trim Components do not require painting – they are painted in the factory. Customers can choose from a variety of paint options or paint the steel themselves

ARMOR POLY® VCI film is superior metal protection applied to Trim Components before shipment from the factory as a protection measure before components are installed.

ARMOR POLY® VCI film protects components from foul weather on construction sites awaiting the building erection process.

In order to protect metal components, and steel framing stored and left outside in the weather until the metal building is installed, here are the protective measures taken by the steel building manufacturer, and painting options offered by the general contractor.

Steel Framing – MUST PAINT TO PREVENT RUST

Inco Steel Buildings, Inc. does not make any guarantees regarding the rust-proofing or corrosion resistance of steel framing. Steel framing in metal buildings MUST BE PAINTED to prevent corrosion and rust.

Steel framing is shipped to the jobsite with primer applied – NOT paint.  In the USA, painting is usually not offered as option when ordering a red iron metal building.

Painting must be applied before or after steel erection.

The paint used must be an industrial grade urethane paint coating suitable for: properly prepared steel, and galvanized steel. Never use water-based paint on red iron steel, or CFS galvanized steel framing.

Painting Red Iron Steel Framing components include painting: (all) columns, rafters, wall girts, doorframes, window openings, finished openings, endwall framing, and roof perlins.

Primer Only. Red Oxide Primer IS NOT PAINT

Primer, Not Paint: Red Iron Steel Framing components are shipped to the jobsite with red oxide primer only.  Red Iron Steel Framing components must be painted to prevent corrosion and rust.

Steel Trim Components – DO NOT PAINT

Inco Steel Buildings, Inc. does not paint the building trim components to include, but not limited to: the metal wall panels and roof panels, all corners, all j-trims, all eave trims, facia, soffit, overhangs, openings trim and/or the gutters and downspouts to be installed on the building.  All trim components are factory painted, have a 40 or 45-year warranty and will not be painted by Inco Steel Buildings, Inc.

Painting trim components will void the building warranty.

ARMOR POLY® VCI Film. Metal Protection for Metal Buildings

The steel building manufacturer applies a ARMOR POLY® VCI Film protective film before shipping to the jobsite. Each steel component is wrapped in a plastic film to prevent corrosion and weather damage during staging at the jobsite.  ARMOR POLY® VCI Film must be removed entirely before the component is installed.

Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial™ Urethane Alkyd Enamel

Sherwin-Williams Pro Industrial™ Urethane Alkyd Enamel: A single-component, high-gloss urethane alkyd enamel. Oil-based coating for painting steel-framed red iron buildings, and galvanized steel CFS metal buildings.

Armor Protective Packaging® Metal Protection for Metal Buildings Awaiting Erection at Jobsite

Steel building materials are sealed and protected with Armor Protective Packaging®, and shipped to the project location in Armor Protective Packaging®.  NOTE: Typically, two workers will take three days (eight-hour days) to peel and remove Armor Protective Packaging® from a:  five thousand square foot steel building package.

Red Iron Steel Metal Protection for Metal Buildings

Primer from the factory.  Red Iron Steel Framing Components are protected with red oxide primer, and shipped unpainted to the project location.  Red oxide primer is NOT a (top-coat) paint.  Red oxide primer is a primer only.

Paint Red Iron Steel Framing Components

NOTE: Painting the steel frame is not required but is recommended to prevent rust and corrosion.  Customer must select the paint color, and pay for the steel framing to be painted by the Builder. Painting is applied before or after steel erection, and is easier when steel is installed.

Metal Protection should be a Priority

Metal building owners rarely paint the steel framing to prevent corrosion and rust. Over time, leaving only the primer on the steel can lead to unsightly rust streaks and corrosion.
